Sangmin Lee
As an interdisciplinary artist Lee gathers an assortment of materials, tools and found objects from his surroundings that culminate into modular spaces. His visual curiosity and resourceful tactics inform his responses to the world around him. Here, through enacting and examining modes of production Lee begins to unravel existing structures and push the boundaries of its framing apparatuses.
It is in playing with these very systems Lee attempts to renegotiate the politics of the self and the established spaces the body occupies.
Son of Korean immigrants Sangmin Lee was born and raised in the densest high rise community in Canada, St. James Town (Toronto, ON). Despite its shortcomings, it is one of the most ethnically rich neighbourhoods in Toronto and is sometimes known as "the world within a block." His upbringing there inspires the heart and soul of his art practice.
