Mathew borrett
hiding places
OCTOBER 31 TO NOVEMBER 24, 2018
Reception: Thursday, November 8, 6 - 9 PM
The Red Head Gallery is pleased to present Hiding Places, an exhibition by artist, Mathew Borrett.
This new work marks a return to explorations undertaken in my Room Series of a dozen years ago. Combining digital and hand-drawn techniques, I've delved into a territory of surreal architectural reveries.
The work examines a personal phenomenology of space. The initial inspiration for the series comes from my experience of the old Ontario farm property I grew up on. The humble house, big timber barn, and surrounding landscapes of forests, fields, and marsh form a vivid backdrop to my memories of childhood. They are my primal places. In dreams, they expand and recombine in endless variation, overlaid with the fantastical. Familiar rooms open up or descend down into unknown spaces. Interior and exterior are blurred, and walls become permeable screens to the imaginary.
