The Red Head Gallery is pleased to present Don't Touch, an exhibition by guest artist Marianne Burlew.
Don’t Touch is a series of collaborations between Marianne Burlew and twelve other artists whose work inspires a physical response. Each artist has contributed one or more pieces to be encapsulated in air and plastic by Burlew, with the intent of taking into consideration the affect of denied or limited interaction with each artwork.
By allotting each art piece it’s own plastic environment, viewers will only be allowed a specific distance from each work. By enforcing this distance, the tension between both the private space and emotional intimacy each work demands is brought into focus. This speaks to a collective frustration with the gallery space as one that alienates the physical desires of the viewer and ultimately rejects the body as a valid method of cognition.
Since graduating from York University in 2011, Marianne Burlew has strived to create work that brings into focus the importance of touch in understanding art and the world around us. Burlew joined the textile studio at the Harbourfront Centre in 2012, allowing her an openly experimental and collegial studio environment until 2014. Burlew has exhibited in galleries such as The Harbourfront Centre, The Gladstone Hotel, The Mississauga Living Arts Centre, Gallerywest, and the Craft Ontario Gallery. She has also had the opportunity to exhibit at the Torpedo Factory Art Center in Alexandria, Virginia and The Art Factory in Paterson, New Jersey. Burlew is currently beginning her MFA studies at the University of Waterloo.
