HINTERLANDS
Mathew borreTt
April 26, 2023 – May 20, 2023
Opening Reception: Friday, May 5, 2023, from 5 – 8 pm with the artist present.
The Red Head Gallery is proud to present the latest show Hinterlands by Mathew Borrett.
From virtual vantage points above his home town of Toronto, Mathew Borrett renders a variety of improbable visions of the city, revisiting a rich thematic territory. By blending the surreal with a dark science-fiction sensibility, the images reorient the city's most familiar landmarks both spatially and temporally. Some of the works depict radical, over-the-top forms of climate change, which the artist intends as meditations on human resilience within the ever-churning cycles of time. Borrett draws inspiration from many sources, and thinks often of the previous ice-age, a mere twelve-thousand years ago, when a vast kilometer-thick sheet of ice sat upon the region where he now resides.
Mathew Borrett was born and raised in rural Ontario and graduated from the Illustration Program at the Ontario College of Art & Design in 1998. He has exhibited in Canada and internationally, and works in the VFX industry for film and television in Toronto. Borrett won a Canadian Screen Award for his work on the interactive virtual reality piece "Biidaaban, First Light" in 2018.
