The Red Head Gallery is pleased to present as part of their summer rental exhibitions, Loving and Obedient Children by artist Amber Helene Müller St. Thomas.
Amber Helene Müller St. Thomas in her first solo exhibition Loving and Obedient Children, explores themes of power, control, manipulation, and the transference of negative energy into a productive entity. Her work employs the use of eclectic tactile methods simultaneously in order to negate the fabrication of clear categorizations. A sporadic durational performance entitled Saturday Study with Snack will take place throughout the exhibition.
Her practice is committed to completing backwards gestures that subvert familial traditions and question cultural ideas of ‘normalcy.’ They interrupt energy through the movement of objects, and by placing interjections within official documents. She is interested in queering space and symbolically reclaiming sites which have been personally and collectively related to transgenerational trauma. Their experience growing up within the Worldwide Church of God (a global organization) has largely influenced her artistic practice.
Müller St. Thomas completed her BFA at the University of Western Ontario. She was the beneficiary of the 2012 Ivey Foundation Studio Arts Award and the Faculty of Arts Alumni Award. In 2014 she was awarded the Canadian Embroiderers' Guild, London Memorial Prize, and named the Fine Arts Gold Medal recipient for her graduating class. Müller St. Thomas is a recipient of the SSHRC Joseph-Armand Bombardier CGS Masters Scholarship (2016).
She has recently shown at ARTSPACE in Peterborough, Ontario, and Forest City Gallery in London, Ontario; and has enacted solo and collaborative performance projects in numerous public and institutional locations. Her work can be found in private collections in Canada. By studying sign processes, signification and communication, Müller St. Thomas develops forms that do not follow consistent criteria. Müller St. Thomas lives and works in Toronto, Ontario. She is currently completing her MFA at York University.
