The Red Head Gallery is pleased to present Predicament, an exhibition by artist Teri Donovan.
Teri Donovan’s latest exhibition reflects her continuing interest in issues related to agency and identity and the social patterns that influence them.
The experience of being constrained or limited by perceived or actual restrictions, self-imposed or externally determined is explored in her new series of photo-based works. In them, Donovan aims to tap into an experience of circumscription and encapsulate a sense of the never-ending search for freedom in the face of limitations.
As a literal and symbolic container, the boxes used in these works convey a condition of restriction, the exact nature of which remains unspecified. From safe space to prison, personal boundary to isolation, protection to limitation, comfort to claustrophobia, boxes elicit the impulse to both escape and remain within.
Movement towards freedom, hampered by circumstance and entrenched patterns, oscillates between disappointment and complacency to renewed hope and determination on the journey towards resolution and freedom from constraints.
Teri Donovan is a Toronto-based artist who uses mixed media to address patterns that shape awareness, thoughts, and behaviours. Through her work, she examines agency, perception and memory, and social impacts on identity.
She graduated from York University and the University of Toronto, and studied at OCAD, the Toronto School of Art, and The Maryland Institute, College of Art in Baltimore. Her work has been exhibited throughout southern Ontario and was featured in Carte Blanche Vol.2: Painting, a survey of contemporary painting in Canada.
