Tri Le (Toronto, ON)
Bio
Tri Le aims to exploit different aspects of people's inner selves through his works. Throughout the history of art development, humans have always been a great source of inspiration for artists. In contemporary settings, the expression of humans in art is no longer limited to only visible elements but is expanding to the inner and invisible psychological state as well.
Tri has a strong passion for the surreal style, through which he can freely express his perspective on psychological issues not only from his own but also from the stories he has the opportunity to hear. His works often depict psychological states from anxiety, fear, and self-predication to mental illness issues that significantly impact people and society, such as Anxiety Disorders, Depression, Bipolar Disorder, or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Through art, he aims to deeply empathize with people and society, especially individuals affected by psychological problems, while promoting healing through sharing and understanding.
Tri has the opportunity to experience various materials, from drawing and painting to photography and sculpture; among them, oil painting is the material that excites him the most because it fully expresses his emotions. In addition, the background and experience he has accumulated in academic art study have supported the way he conveys his ideas. Besides, Tri also spends the necessary time researching the context/theme and practicing techniques before implementing a work or project. This practice helps to make the final result as close to his expectation as possible.
Born and raised in Vietnam, developing an artistic career has faced specific difficulties. So Tri moved to Toronto, Canada, to live, study and work. The vigorous development of art here opens up great opportunities for him to improve his thinking further. He is currently a freelance illustrator/artist; he is also participating in a fine arts program since 2021 to equip himself with other necessary skills and mindsets besides the foundation he already had.
Artist Statement
A state of self-deprecating seriously impacts an individual's lifestyle and physical and mental health. In modern society, people always aim to respect each other without judging their identities, appearances, personalities or origins. However, social norms and prejudices always exist in many other forms, adversely affecting people. "The Hated Mirror" shows the feelings of self-deprecating of people facing social standards and prejudices. The intense ideological struggle and how they close themselves off from society are also expressed through the confusion in thinking and acting.
With oil paint and a surreal style, subjects representing different emotions are combined to create a panorama of turmoil and struggle in mind. The "logic" in an "illogical" context is also a premise that creates contradictions. Besides, the use of light and colour emphasizes the dramatic feeling of the work. Small stories are also put into a general context to express the idea fully.
