Dana Holst is a Canadian artist based in Edmonton, Alberta. Her paintings and drawings have been exhibited across Canada. Working with themes of social stereotyping and power struggles between the sexes, Holst is preoccupied with depicting the female experience. Her girl figures are usually dressed in frilly costumes with matching hair bows and equally menacing emotions. Mysterious scenarios for the wayward girls include hunting for wild animals and living out fairytale fantasies in an attempt to find and exert power. Holst’s work may be found in the public collections of the Alberta Foundation for the Arts (Edmonton, AB), Agnes Etherington Art Centre, (Kingston, ON), Art Bank (Ottawa, ON) and Glenbow Museum (Calgary,AB) as well as private collections in Canada, the U.S. and Europe. Upcoming exhibitions include Make Believe at Sideshow Gallery (Edmonton - October 2010), Prey at Odd Gallery (Dawson City, Yukon - November 2010), and Wile Away at White Water Gallery (North Bay, ON – September 2011) and Red Head Gallery (Toronto, ON – November 2011). A catalogue for her solo exhibition Wile Away will be available in the fall of 2011, made possible through a grant from the Alberta Creative Development Initiative.
