who we are

Red Head Gallery, located in downtown Toronto, is entering its twentieth year as Toronto’s most enduring collectively-run art gallery.  Red Head has stood the test of time as an exhibition space and a cooperative where critically engaged, productive artist/individuals present their artwork in a way that they themselves manage.  Over the past two decades more than 100 artists have been a part of Red Head where they have produced over 200 exhibitions.

Red Head artists are many things -- they are upstarts and they are acknowledged stars.  They make images and objects; manipulate spaces, orchestrate events or perform miracles.  Because of the artists that have made Red Head a continually evolving success, this gallery is a place where significant careers are sustained. Of the last seven Red Head shows in 2009, six were lauded in reviews and previews in The Toronto Globe and Mail, The National Post and in Canadian Art. Red Head artists, both past and present, are noticed and notable.

Red Head is more than what you see at any moment in time. Red Head is a concept as much as a space.  It is a reflection of its sixteen artist-members.  These artists inspire, challenge and support one another through exhibitions and exchanges that take their work out into the wider community – here and globally. The work of current and past Red Head artists can be seen at the Art Gallery of Ontario, the National Gallery of Canada and in major institutions and collections across the country and around the world   In 2009, Red Head artists participated in the UpArt project at the Gladstone Hotel as a part of the Toronto International Art Fair with their collaborative installation, Cases. As well, Red Head artists exhibited their work at the Kunsthaus Santa Fe in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico.   Members are currently planning other exchanges with galleries in Dubai and Cuba.
